After opening Sanford Yoga & Community Center, Lindsey began to introduce to her community what trauma informed services looked like. By meeting people where they were at, she was able to empower others to take control of their lives. This spilled over into the LGBTQ+ Community when Lindsey's kiddo came out as trans in the spring of 2020.
After her kiddo came out as trans, Lindsey wanted to create a space where he could meet other kiddos like him. So Lindsey started a weekly "hangout" where other LGBTQ+ kids/teens could get together and meet other folks like them.
Over time, this project grew. Adults in the community asked if she could offer resources for them. So Lindsey started hosting monthly family Game Nights, built a lending closet, created a Healthcare scholarhsip, started support groups, and even began hosting more events in the community to encourage folks to come out and gather together in public.
Lindsey began hosting Drag Story Hours, where Drag Performers would dress up as fun characters and read stories to her group. This is a fun (and silly) way to helps folks dive into their imagination boosting self-love and creativity.
Lindsey also began hosting Drag Shows with local performers. These locals had the opportunity to express their creativity in a safe and supportivie way, all while helping raise funds for their community.
When we support others to live authenticly and bring out the best in themselves, everyone wins.
But not everyone was excited about the LGBTQ+ Resource Center and their activities. Lindsey tries to avoid giving them the spotlight, but as time wore on, she realized that she needed to make a stand and speak truth to power.
Lindsey's brother, who everyone fondly referred to as "Uncle Jimmy," was a Navy Veteran who moved to North Carolina shortly after they both got out of the military.
Jimmy was a bit rough around the edges, but there wasn't anything that he wouldn't do for those he cared about.
Jimmy would routinely show up to events Lindsey would host to make sure she was safe and that no one messed with the people that he cared about.
Jimmy was a wild one, and overtime, he accidentally infiltrated the KKK. Immediately letting Lindsey know, he asked her to not tell anyone so that he could keep going down the rabbit hole to see how far it went.
Thirty days later, he was found dead from an "accidental overdose."
Lindsey implored law enforcement to investigate Jimmy's text messages and see if there was any connection between his death and the KKK.
Law enforcement declined.
After more than 19 months of Lindsey & Megan trying to get Law Enforcement to run down these leads, Lindsey finally came to the conclusion that law enforcement was simply stringing them along.
Lindsey created the below videos to show exactly how we got here,. They show Jimmy's text messages, and audio of Law Enforcement explaining how although they mishandled the investigation, they still intended to take to no action.
Audio of the Sanford Police Department explaining their delay in investigating death threats made towards Lindsey
Read the text messages that Jimmy's sent Lindsey. Jimmy states that Joel Kelly just showed Jimmy his KKK clan hood.
Listen to the Harnett County Sheriff's Office explain that they don't plan on doing anything about Jimmy's death.
